Amy Maas's spirited paintings are fueled by music and rhythms. Layers of textures and flowing milky forms are slowly exposed. Movement becomes obvious, almost as if the paint is being conducted onto the canvas. The importance of music is further evident by the forming of thick and thin black lines - almost a page from a score or libretto.
The colors and confusion are of the era of EST, TM, mantras, experimentation and self-exploration; of sex, music and protest that continues to follow the Baby Boomers into their middle years - the struggle to accept their new roles with the frustrations and pleasures of being children to aging parents and parents to aging children.
Amy's expressionistic paintings reach out to the viewer and request repeat performances, to be visited again and again - always taking away something new and perhaps playful.
